Mahjong
(and Pung!)
Mahjong (English pronunciation: /mɑːˈdʒɒŋ/ mah-JONG; also transliterated as mah jongg, mah-jongg, and mahjongg)is a fun and popular game that tasks you with solving a tile-matching puzzle before you run out of moves. This game’s importance in the culture of China is evident from one of the quotes of late Mao Zedong, “China has made three tremendous contributions and national treasures to the world. The first is the Chinese traditional medicine; the, second is the novel Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin; and last but not the least is the game of mahjong.” This in itself, clearly displays as to what level this game has been enjoyed by the people of this country for ages, even through ‘Cultural Revolution’ period when it got banned officially. Chinese classical mahjong is the oldest variety of mahjong and was the version introduced to America in the 1920s under various names.
A set of Mahjong tiles consists of 144 tiles typically around 30 x 20 x 15mm. Traditionally, they are made from bone or ivory but modern sets are usually plastic. The set of tiles depict dots, sticks of bamboo, Chinese characters, winds of the four cardinal directions, dragons, flowers, and seasons. Mahjong is a matching game with a simple set of rules:
-
The goal of the game is to remove all tiles from play by matching identical pairs.
-
A tile can only be used if it is open on the left or right side and is not underneath another tile. (The tiles are stacked in a three-dimensional shape.)
-
Any of the four types of flower tiles can be matched freely, and any of the four season tiles can be matched freely.
-
If no matches are possible, the game is lost.
-
Bonus points are earned by quickly matching tiles.
It is played by four players (with some three-player variations found in parts of China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and Southeast Asia). The game and its regional variants are widely played throughout East and Southeast Asia and have also become popular in Western countries. The game has also been adapted into a widespread online entertainment. Similar to the Western card game rummy, mahjong is a game of skill, strategy, and luck.
While many variations of mahjong exist, most variations have some basic rules in common including how a piece is drawn and discarded, the use of suits (numbered tiles) and honors (winds and dragons), the basic kinds of melds allowed, how to deal the tiles and the order of play. Beyond these basic common rules, numerous regional variations exist which may have notably different criteria for legal melds and winning hands, radically different scoring systems and even elaborate extra rules. A group of players may introduce their own house rules which can notably change the feel of play.
A player may play out of turn if a discarded tile completes a set; or, to WIN the hand. To signal they want to play out of turn, the player must say 'PUNG! ' (for a set of 3) or 'KONG! ' (for a set of 4), grab the tile, and display the set immediately in front of them.
